Mondo Vernon & Burns - Thursday, 14th April

Thursday, 14th April from 8pm. Tickets £7 available in advance or on the door.

The Old Hairdressers, Renfield Lane, Glasgow

Mondo Vernon and Burns – A history of Mondo films viewed through the distorting lens of Vernon and Burns: a queasy combination of visual savagery with audio sweetness. A special one-off screening event as part of the Old Hairdressers Fantom Cinema. The film was edited by Vilte Vaitkute and features a narrated essay by Anna McLauchlan.

“A film so debased should not only be restricted to people over 18 years of age, it should also be rejected by anyone with a modicum of self-respect and by all nations that refuse contaminated and rotten merchandise.” - review of Mondo Cane by the Catholic Film Office of France

“I fear you will never persuade the Americans to like Jacopetti – they hate moral ambiguity and their black and white Protestantism clashes head on into the catholic relativism built into every frame of the Mondo Cane films.” - JG Ballard

“A catalogue of horrors…..a hymn to death and mutilation, embellished with a shrug and a giggle.” – Monthly Film Bulletin

Plus Joe Howe will present ‘Era Burp Mesh / Rumba Sphere / Re: Bum Phrase / Mr Rebus Heap’, which is an algorythmically sequenced re-edit of Kon Ichikawa’s 1956 anti-war film, The Burmese Harp made using Max MSP – and the human-machine music of Anneke Kampman.

The tune the old cow died of

Vernon & Burns prove to be popular with Belgian bovines...

"The tune the old cow died of" by Pacôme Béru & Yann Leguay

A listening session for cows , played on a simple turntable and removable loudspeaker which took place in a pastoral landscape reminiscent of old Flemish paintings. The title comes from the Vernon & Burn's record, played during the performance, which is also an English expression taken from an old rhyme:

"There was an old man, and he had an old cow,
But he had no fodder to give her,
So he took up his fiddle and played her the tune -
`Consider, good cow, consider,
This isn't the time for the grass to grow.
Consider, good cow, consider."

A field-performance realized on june the 20, 2009 at 4:43 am , near by : 50° 14' 24.05" N 4° 53' 31.22" E (East-Belgium)

New LP 'Lost Lake' on Shadazz Records

Lost Lake sees the return of the collaborative project between radio art duo Vernon & Burns (Mark Vernon and Barry Burns) and Lied Music (Luke Fowler and John W Fail). It is a sequel to the long-sold out LP Lied Music vs.Boy-Band Tax Returns (released on Ultra Eczema, 2006). This LP merges musique concrète compositional approaches with absurdist improvisational strategies. The album showcases their tendencies towards primitive melodies with dissonant underbellies, carefully sculpted into liminal narratives. A series of sporadic improvised sessions using a diverse array of sound-making instruments (amplified toys and objects, guitar, analogue synths, percussion, squeeze box, field recordings and found tapes) were subsequently manipulated, tortured and caressed, both individually and collectively, into a series of highly idiosyncratic song-forms and sound collages.

The Silver Smokescreen

The Silver Smokescreen:

A Silent Film for the Radio

By Vernon & Burns

“When the devil pulls the strings, all the world must dance...”

Constructing an episodic narrative from silent movie intertitles, Vernon and Burns translate grand melodramatic gestures and deadpan pratfall pantomime into the audio realm. Hand-tinted frames of sound, under-cranked audio slapstick and sepia-soaked expressionism for the ear are projected onto the cinema screen of the mind's eye.

Produced by Vernon & Burns during a residency at WORM studios, Rotterdam. First performed live as part of ‘Popular Noise for the Masses’, March 2010. First broadcast on Cafe Sonore, VPRO Radio 6, June 12th 2010. Narrated by Giles Bailey.

Vernon & Burns are a duo of sound makers who create radio plays, records and performances through an innovative mix of samples, field recordings, voice and music. Performed across Europe, their eclectic live act encompasses everything from ventriloquism and magic to music hall and comedy. They have produced work for radio stations including the BBC, VPRO, Resonance FM, WFMU and The Audible Picture Show. Recent releases include an LP on Gagarin Records and a CD in Staalplaat’s Mort Aux Vaches series.
